Ohio Wesleyan 76, Capital 55
Senior wing Tim Brady (Dublin/Jerome) scored 5 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 9-0 run, and the Bishops went on to post a non-conference win over Capital on Monday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The win extended the Bishops' winning streak to 11 games, giving Ohio Wesleyan its best start since the 1933-34 season. That season, the Bishops won their first 7 games before dropping a 19-18 overtime decision at Marshall, then won their next 5 contests.
Brady buried a jumper on the first possession of the game, then followed with a 3-pointer before lay-ins by junior guard Andy Winters (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) and junior post Marshall Morris (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) extended the Bishop lead to 9-0.
Capital chipped away at the deficit, closing to within 15-10 with the help of a Mitch Westerheide 3-pointer and a Kelly Winter lay-in, and the Crusaders were still within 20-15 after Spencer Niekamp sank a 3-pointer with 10:13 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan would hold the Crusaders without a basket for nearly 5 minutes while assembling an 11-2 run. Junior guard Eric Easley (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) started the burst with a 3-pointer, and lay-ins from Brady and Morris, followed by a pair of hoops from junior post Greg White (Centerville) gave the Bishops a 31-17 lead with 6:39 left in the half.
The Bishops opened the second half with a 12-3 run that put the game out of reach, with sophomore post Reuel Rogers (Columbus/Bexley) contributing a pair of buckets and a 3-point play during the string.
Brady led the Bishops with 14 points, while junior post Billy Reilich (Dayton/Centerville) scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Winters led the Bishops with 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
Michael Sommer led Capital with 9 points.
