Ohio Wesleyan 7, Wooster 2
Junior Will Thieman (Columbus/Upper Arlington), senior Ryan Leslie (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), sophomore John Russell (Maumee), and junior Matt Swaim (Oregon/Clay) were double winners as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference East Division play on Wednesday in Wooster.
With the win, Ohio Wesleyan clinched the No. 8 seed in this weekend's NCAC tournament. The Bishops will open tournament play on Saturday afternoon against top-seeded Kenyon.
Thiemann and Russell teamed up for an 8-2 win over Nick Biniker and Jacob Pine at No. 2 doubles. Thieman then topped Landon Moore in split sets at No. 1 singles, winning by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, while Russell was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Zack Rotter at No. 5 singles.
Leslie and Swaim combined to defeat David Greetham and John Schulz at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 count. Leslie then knocked off Pine, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, and Swaim came from behind to post a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 win over Greetham at No. 6 singles.
Ohio Wesleyan's other win came from the No. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Richie Karban (Elyria) and junior John Rissell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./University School), which bested Moore and Paul Thomas, 8-5.
