Bluffton 5, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Bluffton 7, Ohio Wesleyan 5
Senior first baseman Jackie Kolovich (Newton Falls/Warren Kennedy) drove in 2 runs as Ohio Wesleyan pared a 7-0 deficit to 7-5, but Bluffton withstood the Bishop rally to win the nightcap and complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday in Bluffton.
In the opener, Bluffton's Megan Patton and Kayla Owens combined on a 4-hit shutout.
Bluffton built a 7-0 lead in the nightcap, with Catie Clark belting a 2-run homer in the first, Emily Manahan lining a 2-run single to highlight the Beavers' 3-run fourth, and Mackenzie Bedlion and Shelby Erford collecting RBI singles in the fifth.
Junior catcher Brooke Nethers (Newark/Licking Valley) led off the sixth with a single, and one out later, freshman first baseman Cassi Ladina (Dublin/Coffman) singled, and both runners came around to score when Beaver second baseman Brittany Baker and rightfielder Alexandra Haugh committed throwing errors on the play.
Senior second baseman Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) doubled to lead off the Bishop seventh, and junior outfielder Lauren Elkins (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) was hit by a pitch. After the runners moved to second and third on an infield out, sophomore shortstop Erica Bryan (Wapakoneta) beat out an infield single, with Walsh scoring on the play and Elkins holding at second. The runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch, and Kolovich followed with a pinch-hit single to score Elkins and Bryan. Bluffton pitcher Chloe Shell, who had blanked the Bishops on 3 hits through the first 5.0 innings, then returned to the circle and retired freshman outfielder Chelsea Denman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) to end the game.
Junior righthander Amanda Barker (Granville) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the opener on Chelsie Osborne's homer in the first inning, and tacked on another run when Clark followed with a double and scored on Manahan's single.
Lindsay Robertson's RBI double highlighted a 2-run third, and the Beavers added an unearned run in the sixth.
Ohio Wesleyan stranded a pair of runners in the third and again in the fourth, and the Bishops had runners at second and third with one out in the fifth as Denman was hit by a pitch and Nethers singled, but Owens retired Bryan and Ladina to get out of the inning.
Sophomore righthander Dani Haley (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
