A total of 9 Ohio Wesleyan University men's lacrosse players were named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference teams, it was announced today.
Senior midfielder Jesse Lawrence (McLean, Va./Maret (D.C.) School), sophomore midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome), and junior attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) were first-team All-NCAC selections; senior defenseman Nathan Barnett (Columbus/Upper Arlington), junior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North), freshman goalkeeper Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School), freshman attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School), and freshman defenseman Garrett Van Schaick (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) were second-team all-conference honorees; and freshman defenseman Steve Barnett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was an honorable mention all-conference pick.
McMahon was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year. He leads the NCAC in saves (165) and saves percentage (.630) this season.
Lawrence, the Bishops' face-off specialist, won 64 percent of his face-offs this season, and leads the league with 198 face-off wins.
Schnell was second on the team and ranks third in the NCAC with 42 goals, and added 16 assists for a total of 58 points, the latter figure tied for third in the league. Schnell was a second-team All-NCAC selection and was the NCAC's Newcomer of the Year in 2011.
Short led the Bishops in scoring with 21 goals and 43 assists for a total of 64 points this season, leading the league in assists and ranking second in total points. He was a first-team all-conference selection in 2011.
Nathan Barnett, Steve Barnett, and Van Schaick were starters on an Ohio Wesleyan defense that ranks third in the conference with 116 goals allowed, including 37 in conference play. Nathan Barnett tied for second on the team with 36 ground balls, Steve Barnett collected 26 ground balls, and Van Schaick shared the team lead with 9 caused turnovers. Nathan Barnett was a second-team all-conference selection in 2011.
Bassett led the Bishops with 43 goals this season, ranking second in the conference, and added 7 assists for a total of 50 points, the latter figure eighth in the conference. He was a first-team all-conference selection in 2011.
Minkler ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points. The 46 points ranks ninth in the NCAC.
Ohio Wesleyan finished with an 11-5 overall record this season. The Battling Bishops advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs and finished in third place in the NCAC standings with a 3-2 record.
