Frentsos, Sega Lead Bishops Past Kenyon

5/3/2012 11:11:00 PM

Ohio Wesleyan 9, Kenyon 4

Senior outfielder Seth Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) tied a school record and junior righthander Brandon Sega (Columbus/Upper Arlington) turned in an outstanding pitching performance as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Kenyon in Game 2 of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday in Chillicothe.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the winners' bracket final to face Wooster, a 4-1 winner over DePauw in Thursday's opener.  The Ohio Wesleyan-Wooster clash is set for noon on Friday, with the winner advancing to Saturday's championship game.

Kenyon will face DePauw in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The Bishops wasted no time in taking the lead, as junior second baseman Zach Bott (Dublin/Coffman) opened the game with a single and senior shortstop Steve Gaydos (Strongsville) followed with a single.  Senior first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) followed with an infield out, moving the runners to second and third, and junior catcher James Toland (Stow/Walsh Jesuit) lofted a fly ball to right to score Bott and send Gaydos to third.  After a walk to senior first baseman Nathan Strome (Sidney), Frentsos blasted a double to left to score Gaydos.

Knezovich launched a solo home run into the trees beyond the rightfield fence to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 3-0 in the third, and a Frentsos single, a triple by sophomore third baseman Sean Vollenweider (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales), and a single by freshman outfielder J.J. Buckey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) made it 5-0 in the fourth.

Knezovich singled and Toland doubled to open the fifth, chasing Kenyon starter Tim Krahn, with the runners eventually scoring on a Frentsos single and a Vollenweider sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.

Toland's RBI double and Frentsos' RBI single gave the Bishops a 9-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

Meanwhile, Sega was brilliant, facing the minimum through 3.0 innings with the help of a pair of Bishop double plays, including a dazzling first-inning play by Bott to run down a fly ball in right field and then throw back to first to double up Kenyon baserunner Andrew Dunn.

Sega allowed 3 singles through the first 5.0 innings, and a 1-out double by Dunn in the sixth marked the first Lord runner to advance past first base.

The Lords averted the shutout on Zach Karson's RBI single in the sixth, and added 2 runs in the seventh, with Dunn's RBI double the highlight.

Sega worked 6.2 innings to collect the mound decision.

Frentsos highlighted the Bishop offense by going 5-for-5 with 3 RBI.  The 5 hits tied the Ohio Wesleyan single-game record.

Krahn was the starting and losing pitcher for Kenyon.
