Ohio Wesleyan 2, Oberlin 1
Senior midfielder Lauren Bailey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) and freshman attacker Montana Knapp (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) scored goals to stake Ohio Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead, and the Bishops went on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Thursday at Selby Stadium.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first half. Sophomore attacker Allison Smith (East Aurora, N.Y.) took a shot that Oberlin keeper Kiran Puri saved, but Bailey was there to knock the rebound into the back of the Yeowomen cage.
Knapp increased the Bishop lead to 2-0 early in the second half, sending a hard backhand shot past Puri.
The Yeowomen closed to within 2-1 when Jodi Helsel scored from close range in the 53rd minute. Oberlin had a good chance to tie the game in the closing minutes when Eloise Reid sent a diagonal pass to the goal mouth for Yeowomen attacker Karin Yoshida, but the Bishop defense had Yoshida well-covered and prevented a shot at the equalizer.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 15-8. Freshman goalkeeper Karson Stevenson (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) finished with 1 save in the Bishop cage, while Puri had 6 saves for the Yeowomen.
