Ohio Wesleyan 47, Denison 44
Sophomore post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) scored 9 of her team-best 11 points during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan withstood a late Denison rally to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Big Red on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Denison led, 33-29, with 11:07 remaining in regulation time when the Bishops took the lead with a 10-0 run.
Sophomore guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) hit the second of 2 free throws, and after a lay-in from freshman wing Emily Julius (Avon), McQuade put the Bishops ahead to stay with a lay-in at the 9:15 mark.
McQuade followed with another basket gave the Bishops a 36-33 lead, then Henning added a jumper from the lane before hitting the second of 2 free throws for a 39-33 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 5:10 remaining.
The lead was still 6 points when Henning hit 2 more free throws at the 4:39 mark, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 41-35 lead.
Denison rallied to within a basket on a pair of Nicole Coggins free throws and a Kyli Parker lay-in, and after another Henning hoop, Parker knocked down a 3-pointer to bring the Big Red within 43-42 with 2:05 to play.
Freshman guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) drove for a lay-in with :54 to go, and after Serafina Nuzzo answered with a jumper for Denison, it was Fedorka again, sinking a pair of free throws to make it 47-44 with :22 left.
Parker and Nuzzo had looks at a game-tying 3-pointer, but each was off the mark, and sophomore wing Mary Corbett (Columbus/Upper Arlington) rebounded the second miss and was fouled with :01.7 remaining. Corbett missed the front end of the one-and-one, with Kinsey Bryant-Lees getting the rebound, but the clock ran out before Denison could get off a shot.
Ohio Wesleyan had broken a 17-17 tie with a 3-pointer by Fedorka with 7:35 left in the first half, and Henning's lay-in at the 3:30 mark extended the Bishop lead to 22-17.
The Bishops still led, 27-21, on a Julius 3-pointer early in the second half, but Denison took the lead with a 12-2 run that included baskets by Nuzzo, Mary Margaret Habel, and Coggins. Habel added a pair of free throws and Nuzzo canned a jumper before Candise Love followed with a basket that gave the Big Red their 33-29 lead and set up the thrilling conclusion.
Henning and Julius shared the Bishop lead with 11 points apiece, with Julius adding a game-best 10 rebounds for a double-double. Henning led the Bishops with 4 assists.
Nuzzo led Denison with 17 points.
