Ohio Wesleyan University senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) was named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced by the USTFCCCA.
Newman received all-region honors in the heptathlon and the high jump after recording one of the region's top 5 performances in each event. At last week's North Coast Athletic Conference championship, Newman was named NCAC Field Events Athlete of the Year after winning the heptathlon and the high jump and finishing second in the long jump, fourth in the pole vault, and seventh in the triple jump for a total of 35 points in field events.
Newman will be competing at the NCAA Division III championship meet in the heptathlon on Friday and Saturday. This will be his fourth consecutive NCAA Division III appearance in the event. He won All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in 2017 and finished 11th in 2016 and 13th in 2015.
