Box Score Ohio Wesleyan 95, Kenyon 86Senior wing Nick Felhaber (Holland/Toledo St. John's) scored 8 points during a 16-1 second-half run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and tied a school record as the Bishops defeated Kenyon in their season and North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday in Gambier.
Ohio Wesleyan had closed out the first half with a 5-0 burst, getting a lay-in and a free throw from freshman guard Nate Axelrod (Dublin/Coffman) and a bucket from sophomore wing Ben Simpson (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to break a 39-39 tie and take a 44-39 lead into the locker room.
Kenyon countered with a 10-0 run to open the second half, with Cooper Handelsman collecting 3 straight baskets to finish off the outburst and give the Lords a 49-44 lead just over 2 minutes into the period.
Felhaber buried a 3-pointer to start Ohio Wesleyan's 16-1 run, and after baskets by Axelrod and Simpson, along with a hoop from junior post Claude Gray (Avon), it was Felhaber with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 60-50 lead with 12:15 to play in regulation time.
The Lords rallied to within 61-56 with the help of a Dan Voigt 3-pointer and a Tim Connolly jumper, and Kenyon was still within 66-60 after a pair of Jonathan Amador free throws with 7:57 remaining.
Axelrod had a lay-in and a 3-pointer and Gray added a free throw and a lay-in during an 8-0 run that extended the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 88-70 at the 3:20 mark, and Kenyon would not come closer than the final 9-point margin.
Felhaber went 5-for-5 from the field, all from 3-point range, and hit both his free throw attempts to finish with 17 points. The 5-for-5 performance from beyond the arc ties the school single-game record for 3-point field goal percentage set by Dirk Miller at Muskingum on Dec. 15, 1988, and equaled 3 times since, by Jimmy Francis at Wittenberg on Jan. 6, 2001; by Bryan King vs. Allegheny on Jan. 18, 2003; and by Brian Cafarella at Centre on March 8, 2008.
Simpson was 7-for-11 from the field en route to 17 points, sharing team honors and establishing a career best. Axelrod and junior wing Zak Davis (Newark, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished with 16 points apiece, a career best for Davis, and Gray finished with 11 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
Connolly led Kenyon with 23 points.
