Ohio Wesleyan University will induct 6 former Battling Bishop standouts — including 5 All-America selections — and a former head coach into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame during ceremonies on Friday, October 7, during Homecoming & Family Weekend.
The 8 Hall of Fame inductees are:
• Matthew Capone '03 — He won 2 All-America citations as a running back in football, and finished his career as Ohio Wesleyan's all-time leading rusher. He ranked second on the team in rushing with 543 yards as a freshman, scoring 4 touchdowns in a game against Oberlin, and was an honorable mention All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection. As a sophomore, he ran for 1133 yards (then the second-highest single-season total in OWU history), including a 201-yard effort against Kenyon (then the sixth-highest single-game figure at OWU) and a 4-touchdown game against Oberlin. He ranked second in the NCAC in rushing and all-purpose yards, third in scoring, and fourth in kick returns. His junior year, he ran for 614 yards to rank sixth in the league in rushing, was sixth in the league in all-purpose yards, and was an honorable mention all-conference choice. As a senior, he set a school record with 1368 rushing yards and tied a school record with 15 touchdowns. He led the NCAC in rushing, kick returns, and all-purpose yards and ranked ninth in total offense. He was a first-team All-NCAC pick at running back and second-team as a return specialist, was a second-team All-America selection by the Football Gazette, and a third-team All-America pick on the Hewlett-Packard team. Ohio Wesleyan went 9-1, scoring a school-record 418 points, and ranked second in the nation in rushing and fourth in total offense. He set Ohio Wesleyan career records with 3658 yards rushing, 666 carries (a 5.5 average), 41 touchdowns, and 248 points, and his totals of 43 kick returns and 972 kick return yards both ranked third. His career total of 5483 all-purpose yards set an NCAC record. During his 4 seasons, Ohio Wesleyan improved in each season and was 27-13 (.675) overall.
• Nan Carney-DeBord — Carney-DeBord coached women's basketball from 1985-2001 and 2002-11, and field hockey from 1985-90. During her 25 seasons as women's basketball coach, the Bishops went 433-277 (.656), won 5 NCAC championships and finished as NCAC runner-up 9 times, won 4 NCAC tournament titles and reached the tournament championship game 12 times, and made 5 NCAA Division III playoff appearances. In her second game as a head coach, the Bishops upset NCAA Division III quarterfinalist Muskingum on the Muskies' home court. Her 1990-91 team set a school record with 20 wins; the 1991-92 team set a school record with 23 wins, won the NCAC championship and the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs; and the 2000-01 team set a school record with 26 wins, won the NCAC championship and the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the national semifinals of the NCAA Division III tournament, defeating Hope and Baldwin Wallace on the way to a national third-place finish. Her 433 wins was tied for 28th all-time in NCAA Division III. In field hockey, she posted a winning record in her first season, led the Bishops to their first national ranking the following season, then won 4 consecutive NCAC championships and made 4 straight NCAA Division III playoff appearances. During the 1987-90 seasons, her teams went 38-1-1 in NCAC competition. The 1987 team tied a school record with 16 wins, and the 1989 team broke that mark with 17 wins. She was named WBCA Division III Coach of the Year in women's basketball in 2001, and was named NCAC Coach of the Year 7 times in basketball and twice in field hockey.
• Linsey Longstreth '06 — An All-America second baseman, she was Ohio Wesleyan's first All-American in softball. As a freshman, she batted .245 with 10 RBI and ranked third in the NCAC with 26 runs scored. She had a breakthrough season as a sophomore, setting an OWU record with a .406 batting average (fourth in the NCAC) and driving in 24 runs (fifth in the NCAC). She set OWU single-game records with 3 triples against Denison, 4 hits against Ohio Northern and Oberlin, and 9 total bases against Ohio Northern and Denison. She led the NCAC in slugging percentage (.672), on-base percentage (.503), runs scored (44), doubles (12), triples (9), and total bases (86), and ranked second in hits (52), all OWU season records. She was a first-team All-NCAC selection and a second-team All-America pick as Ohio Wesleyan went 28-15, shared the NCAC title with an 11-3 record, and advanced to the championship game of the NCAC tournament. Her junior year, she batted .393 (then second all-time at OWU) to rank second in the NCAC, hit 1 home run and drove in 22 runs. She set an OWU record with 4 runs scored against Merchant Marine. She led the NCAC in on-base percentage (.589), runs (34), and walks (24), tied for second in doubles (11), ranked third in batting average, hits (44), and tied for third in total bases (66). She was a first-team All-NCAC selection. Ohio Wesleyan finished 22-14, won the NCAC championship with an 11-3 record, and finished as runner-up in the NCAC tournament. As a senior, she batted .374 with 1 HR and 23 RBI. She set an OWU record with 4 stolen bases vs. St. Norbert. She led the league in walks (30) and ranked second in on-base percentage (.497), third in runs scored (40), and tied for third in doubles (14). She was a second-team all-conference pick. Ohio Wesleyan advanced to the championship game of the NCAC tournament. She set OWU career records for at bats (510), runs (144), doubles (48), triples (18), total bases (269), walks (87), and on-base percentage (.451) and ranked second all-time in hits (179) and third in slugging percentage (.527) and RBI (79). Her career batting average of .351 ranked third all-time. During her 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan was 93-70 (.571), including 38-18 (.679) in the NCAC, won 2 NCAC championships, and reached the NCAC tournament all 4 years, finishing as runner-up 3 times.
• Ryan Martin '05 — An All-America selection in men's soccer, he also received NCAC Player of the Year honors. As a freshman, he contributed 3 goals and 5 assists for 11 points, and was named to the all-tournament team at the adidas® Invitational. Ohio Wesleyan went 19-6-1 overall, won the NCAC championship and the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Division III semifinals. His sophomore season, he received the Dick Gauthier Award as the MVP of the Fred Myers Invitational. He ranked second in the NCAC in scoring with team bests of 11 goals, 12 assists, and 34 points. He was a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, and all-region selection. Ohio Wesleyan was 17-4-1 overall, won the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament. As a junior, he was named to all-tournament teams at both the Fred Myers Invitational and the adidas® Invitational. He led the team with 6 assists (tied for third in NCAC) and ranked second on the team with 9 goals (tied for fourth in NCAC) and 24 points (fifth in NCAC). He repeated as a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, and all-region selection. He opened his senior year by winning the Dick Gauthier Award as MVP of the Fred Myers Invitational for a second time, and was named to the all-tournament team at the adidas® Invitational. He shared the league lead with 9 assists, scored 7 goals to rank second on the team and tie for 10th in the NCAC, and his 23 points was second on the team and tied for fourth in the NCAC. He was a first-team All-NCAC pick and was named an NCAC Player of the Year as well as first-team All-Ohio, first-team all-region, and third-team All-America. Ohio Wesleyan went 20-1, won the NCAC championship with a 9-0 record, won the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the NCAA tournament. During his career, he scored 30 goals and had 32 assists for 92 points. Ohio Wesleyan was 72-13-4 (.831), including a 32-4 (.875) conference mark, with 3 conference championships, 3 NCAC tournament titles, and 3 NCAA appearances.
• John Schlegel '05 — A 3-time All-America selection as an attacker in men's lacrosse, he was a 2-time NCAC Player of the Year choice. His freshman year, he compiled 41 goals, 23 assists, and 64 points. His average of 2.93 goals per game tied for second in the NCAC, and his 2.57 points per game was second in the league. He was a second-team All-NCAC selection and was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year. As a sophomore, he led Bishop attackers with 33 goals, led the team with 26 assists, and his 59 points was second on the team. His average of 2.54 goals per game was third in the NCAC, his 2.00 assists per game led the NCAC, and his average of 4.54 points per game was second in the NCAC. He was a second-team All-NCAC selection and an honorable mention All-America pick. His junior year, he led the team with 34 goals and 54 points, and his 20 assists were second on the team. His average of 2.23 goals per game was second in the NCAC, as was his average of 3.69 points per game. He set up the game-winner with 1:37 left in a 7-6 win at Denison, then led OWU with 4 goals and 2 assists in a 10-9 win over Denison. He was a first-team All-NCAC selection and was named NCAC Player of the Year, and was an honorable mention All-America pick. As a senior, he led the team with 59 goals, 23 assists, and 82 points, led the NCAC in goals and assists, and his average of 5.86 points per game led the NCAC. He scored 8 goals at Washington & Jefferson, tying for fourth place on the OWU single-game list. He repeated as NCAC Player of the Year and was a first-team All-NCAC and second-team All-America selection. His career total of 167 goals ranked third on the OWU list, while his 259 points was fifth on the career list. During his 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan went 37-18 (.673), including a mark of 18-2 (.900) in the NCAC, won 2 NCAC titles and shared another, and made 2 NCAA Division III tournament appearances.
• Sarah Wall '06 — A 3-time All-America and 2-time Academic All-America® selection in soccer, she was named NCAC Offensive Player of the Year for 4 straight years. As a freshman, she led the NCAC in scoring with 22 goals, 16 assists, and 60 points. The 22 goals was third all-time at OWU, the 16 assists tied the OWU season record, and the 60 points was third all-time. She scored the game-winning goal in both true road games during OWU's run to the national championship, scoring in the fifth minute in the regional title game at Wilmington and in the third minute in a national semifinal at William Smith, and assisted the game-winner in the national championship game against Messiah. She was a first-team All-NCAC selection and was named NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, and was a first-team All-Ohio, first-team all-region, and second-team All-America selection. Ohio Wesleyan compiled a 24-0 record and won the NCAC championship, the NCAC tournament, and the NCAA Division III championship. As a sophomore, she again led the NCAC in scoring with 24 goals (third all-time at OWU), 10 assists, and 58 points (fourth all-time at OWU). She tied the OWU single-game record with 4 goals against Earlham, and her 9 points against Earlham set a school record. She repeated as first-team All-NCAC, NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Ohio, and was a first-team All-America selection. Her junior year, she again led the NCAC in scoring with 20 goals, 13 assists (tied for fourth all-time at OWU), and 53 points (fifth all-time at OWU). She tied OWU records with 4 goals and 9 points in an NCAA first-round game against Manchester. She repeated as first-team All-NCAC, NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Ohio, and first-team All-America, and was a first-team Academic All-America® selection. Ohio Wesleyan went 16-3-2, won the NCAC championship, won the NCAC tournament, received a first-round bye and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. She recovered from a serious automobile accident to play her senior season and served as a playmaker rather than the primary scorer, compiling 9 goals, 14 assists (fourth all-time at OWU), and 32 points to rank third in the NCAC in scoring. She repeated as first-team All-NCAC, NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Ohio, and first-team Academic All-America® selection, and was voted Academic All-America® of the Year. Ohio Wesleyan went 13-6-1, won the NCAC tournament (becoming the first team to win twice on the road to win the tournament), and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. She set OWU and NCAC records with her 53 assists, and her career totals of 75 goals and 203 points ranked second all-time at OWU. During her 4 seasons, Ohio Wesleyan was 70-11-3 (.851) and 28-4-0 in the NCAC (.875), with 2 conference championships, 3 tournament titles, 3 NCAA tournament appearances, and a national championship.
• Carrie Williams '05 — A 4-time all-region selection in women's lacrosse, she finished her career as Ohio Wesleyan's all-time leader in goals scored. Her freshman year, she totaled team bests of 37 goals and 50 points. Her average of 2.64 goals per game was third in the NCAC, her average of 0.95 assists per game tied for fifth in the NCAC, and her average of 3.57 points per game was third in the league. She was a second-team All-NCAC selection and a second-team all-region choice. As a sophomore, she led the Bishops with 44 goals, 18 assists, and 62 points. Her average of 2.93 goals per game was sixth in the NCAC, her 1.20 assists per game was fourth in the NCAC, and her average of 4.13 points per game was fourth. She was a second-team All-NCAC selection and an first-team all-region pick. Her junior year, she led the team with 35 goals and 47 points. Her average of 2.69 goals per game was third in the NCAC, as was her average of 3.62 points per game, and her average of 0.92 assists per game was fourth in the league. She was a first-team All-NCAC selection and was a first-team all-region pick. As a senior, she led the team with 41 goals, 16 assists, and 57 points. Her averages of 2.56 goals and 1.00 assists per game each ranked third in the NCAC, and her average of 3.56 points per game was fourth in the NCAC. She scored 3 goals during a 7-1 game-ending run against Denison in the championship game of the NCAC tournament, including scoring the game-winner to break an 11-11 tie, as Ohio Wesleyan won its first conference championship in women's lacrosse. She was named NCAC Offensive Player of the Year and was a first-team All-NCAC and first-team all-region selection. Ohio Wesleyan went 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC, won the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time. She set the OWU career record with 157 goals, while her career total of 59 assists ranked fourth and her 216 points was second on the OWU list. During her 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan went 38-25 (.603), including a mark of 14-12 (.538) in the NCAC, won one NCAC tournament, and made an NCAA Division III tournament appearance. She also lettered twice in soccer and was a member of both the 2001 and 2002 national championship teams.
The 2016 class of inductees is the 56th to be inducted into the Ohio Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame and the 41st to include women.
